My daughter and I camp often, but summer camping is usually not my favorite. Sleeping in high heat rarely leads to a good night’s rest. Still, we wanted to test our new Sportz Cove setup and spend some time outdoors before the season slipped away.
The overnight temperatures looked manageable, so we packed up the SUV and headed to a nearby state park about an hour from home.
By the end of the trip, we had learned a lot about vehicle camping and how the Sportz Cove performed in real conditions.
First Impressions of the Sportz Cove Tent
After arriving at camp, we took a short hike before setting up the tent.
My daughter climbed a small rock wall while attempting to befriend an armadillo that clearly preferred to be left alone.
Once back at camp, it was time to figure out the tent setup.
I had never used an SUV tent before, so I expected a bit of trial and error. Surprisingly, the setup process felt straightforward almost immediately.

Easy Setup and Take Down
One of the biggest positives in this Sportz Cove Tent review was the setup process.
I started assembling the tent without directions and still managed to figure most of it out quickly. The instructions were clear, included pictures, and made the remaining setup simple.
Even better was packing it away afterward.
Anyone who camps regularly knows the frustration of trying to force a tent back into its storage bag. This tent compressed surprisingly well and fit back into the carrying bag without a fight.
That alone made a strong first impression.
Durable Materials
The material quality also stood out right away.
Some budget tents feel thin enough to see sunlight directly through the walls. The Sportz Cove felt much more durable and noticeably thicker.
During the hottest parts of the day, the tent provided solid shade and stayed more comfortable than expected.
The heavier material also gave the tent a more reliable feel overall, especially for repeated camping trips.
The SUV Felt Much Larger
Once the tent connected to the back of the vehicle, the interior space changed completely.
With the rear hatch open, the SUV felt much more open and breathable. Even with gear packed inside, it never felt cramped.
That extra space made the camping setup feel more comfortable than sleeping in the SUV alone.

Watch Your Vehicle Battery
Leaving the rear hatch open created one problem I had not considered.
Dashboard lights stayed on while the vehicle doors remained open for airflow. Instead of risking a drained battery overnight, I disconnected the battery before going to sleep.
That turned out to be a good decision.
At one point during the night, I heard rustling outside the vehicle. A raccoon had wandered right up to the open door and nearly climbed inside before I scared it off.
Lesson learned!
Next time, I would keep the doors shut and crack the windows instead.
Wind and Rain Could Be a Concern
Most areas of the tent secured tightly to the SUV, but a few side sections relied mainly on elastic tension.
We had calm weather during the trip, so it never became an issue. Still, I could see stronger wind or heavy rain testing those connection points more aggressively.
It is something worth considering if you regularly camp in rough weather.
You Have to Pack Up Before Driving
This was probably the biggest tradeoff.
Unlike a standalone tent, the Sportz Cove connects directly to the vehicle. That means if you want to leave camp, you need to disconnect and pack up the setup first.
Thankfully, teardown is quick, but it still removes some of the convenience of simply driving away whenever you want.

Overall, this Sportz Cove Tent review ended on a positive note.
The fishing was slow, the temperatures were warm, and the raccoons were far too confident, but the trip was still a success.
The tent felt durable, easy to use, and much more spacious than expected. Most importantly, it helped create another memorable camping trip with my daughter.
Now that we understand the setup better, the next trip should go even smoother.
And if the raccoons come back, hopefully they bring less attitude next time.
